18 Undergraduate Research Interns

at the 2009 AAAS Annual Meeting Poster Session

CHICAGO, IL –The American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS) invited 18 undergraduate interns sponsored by the Department of Energy’s Office of Science to present their research in the Poster Session at the AAAS Annual Meeting in Chicago, Illinois on February 12-16, 2009.

Each year, the Office of Science’s Office of Workforce Development for Teachers and Scientists (WDTS) provides funding for more than 600 undergraduate students to participate in hands-on mentored research internships at one of the 17 DOE National Laboratories.  Students write a final research paper to document their work at the laboratory; the top student papers are selected on a peer-reviewed basis for publication in the Office of Science’s annual Journal of Undergraduate Research.
The AAAS is the world’s largest general scientific society and publisher of the prestigious journal, Science. As part of its Annual Meeting, AAAS hosts an undergraduate Poster Session, which provides a forum for selected individuals to present their research.  Since 2003, AAAS has partnered with the Office of Science to recognize the accomplishments of outstanding undergraduates by inviting DOE interns whose papers are to be published in that year’s Journal of Undergraduate Research to present their research at the AAAS Annual Meeting.
The 18 DOE interns invited to present their research at the AAAS Annual Meeting conducted their internships at nine DOE National Laboratories:

• Patrick Brown at National Renewable Energy Laboratory;
• Alejandro Campos at Princeton Plasma Physics Laboratory;
• Joseph Cavanagh at Oak Ridge National Laboratory;
• Eliot Chang at Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory;
• Marie Chilton at Pacific Northwest National Laboratory;
• Tiffany Cochran at Argonne National Laboratory;
• Jason C. Fuller Pacific Northwest National Laboratory;
• Tasha Gaylor at Argonne National Laboratory;
• Christine Jonason at Pacific Northwest National Laboratory;
• Yonatan Kahn at Thomas Jefferson National Laboratory;
• Kristin Kowolik at Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory;
• Garrett Marino at Oak Ridge National Laboratory;
• Jessica Olstad at National Renewable Energy Laboratory;
• Mariano J. Padilla at Oak Ridge National Laboratory;
