Who Will
Be the National Science Bowl® Survivor From
Maryland, Virginia, and Washington, D.C.?
Local High School Teams Compete for a Trip to
Australia
Forget Ogakor and Kucha tribe members competing
for $1 million in the Australian outback. On Saturday,
February 24, high school students from the District
of Columbia, Maryland, and Virginia will try to
follow the castaways to Australia and attend the
International Science School at the University
of Sydney this summer. The students will compete
in the regional championship of the 11th National
Science Bowl«, sponsored by the U.S. Department
of Energy.
"Helping prepare today's young people to
realize opportunities in math, science and technology
is critical to the mission of the Department of
Energy," said Secretary of Energy Spencer
Abraham. "The National Science Bowl«
encourages students to look to the sciences for
an exciting, fulfilling future."
The National Science Bowl« is the nation's
premier high school science and mathematics academic
competition. Students will answer questions on
the topics of astronomy, biology, chemistry, mathematics,
physics, earth, computer and general science.
There's no gaining immunity here; all teams must
compete in order to move on.
The winners of the regional competition will face
61 teams from 39 states, the U.S. Virgin Islands
and two Native American tribes in the national
competition May 4 - 7. Last year's regional winners
were Georgetown Day School, Washington, D.C.;
Montgomery Blair High School, Silver Spring, Md.;
and St. Anne's-Belfield School, Charlottesville,
Va.
